Over the last year I’ve been trying to “detox” our home and health products. Everything from toothpaste to deodorant to floor cleaner to home fragrance has been changed slowly, but surely. One of the things I wanted to transition from using was traditional body soap into something more natural and good for my body. When I was browsing at our local health food store I came across Giovanni Cosmetics D:tox Body Bar. It was a big black bar of soap. Black soap? I had no idea what to think. It’s black because it contains volcanic ash, activated charcoal, and antioxidants that help remove pollutants from your skin. There was nothing fancy about it – no color or fragrance theme – but I just had to try it! I remember when I switched from traditional antiperspirant/deodorant to an organic powdered deodorant and that my underarms went through about 2 weeks before they were completely free of what the using antiperspirants left behind. If my daily deodorant did that, what about the products I used on the rest of my body? My face? My arms and legs? Yikes. I looked up the whole line of D:tox products from Giovanni and knew that’s how I could do it! I was so excited that a company out there recognized the need to get the bad stuff out and use the good stuff to detox and replenish.
So, first of all, don’t be put off by the black bar soap, or any of the D:tox products, because you’ll see they all look and feel different. But that’s what’s good about them! When you switch from any traditionl product to something that’s better for you, you’re going to go through a period of “wait, this can’t be right.” Once you get used to the fact that it doesn’t lather the same, it doesn’t look the same, it doesn’t make my body smell “mountain fresh” or whatever they call it, you’ll see that it’s actually doing a better job.
Though you can use all of Giovanni’s D:tox products individually, they work best as a system. For body, in addition to the Purifying Body Bar (which is technically the second step), the offer the Purifying Body Wash (Step 1, and also a black liquid, so don’t be put off by it!), Purifying Exfoliant Scrub (Step 3), and the Replenishing Body Lotion (Step 4). When using the four steps all together I feel like a million bucks and completely guilt-free about how I got there – I didn’t use unnecessary chemicals, in fact, by using the D:tox system I helped rid my body of those pollutants. The body scrub, in particular, is like nothing I’ve used before. Once it’s smoothed over the skin it activates and becomes warm, almost hot, and because of that is super-effective. The body lotion is great, too, because when you’re detoxing the bad stuff out, you want to be able to replenish it with good stuff, and the Giovanni D:tox Body Lotion contains acai and goji berry antioxidants and vitamins and minerals to do just that.
Giovanni D:tox also offers a five part system of facial care products. Also different in texture and color than most facial care products, Step 1 is the Purifying Facial Cleanser, Step 2 is the Purifying Facial Scrub, and Step 3 is the Replenishing Facial Moisturizer, which acts like the body lotion described above does and replenishes the skin with antioxidants and vitamins and minerals. The fourth part of the system is a use-as-need product, the wonderful Purifying Facial Mask that I think really kicks up the D:tox method into high gear. I have used that about twice a week in addition to the other three steps and really, really like what it does to my skin. The fifth part of the system is the Purifying & Exfoliating Facial Cleansing Towelettes, which I’ve purchased from Target for about $5. They are awesome, especially for nights when I’m just to darn beat to wash my face. I have been so happy using this system! When I first started using the system, I noticed for the first few mornings I had a few extra pimples, which to me says that the product is working at detoxing my skin of the oils and dirt!
I really can’t say enough nice things about Giovanni D:tox, but I do want to add that they’re all vegan products, never tested on animals, phalate- and paraben-free. Need one more great thing about them? Giovanni donates 5% of the retail sales of their D:tox line to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Plus, and one of the best parts, they are super affordable. You can pick up Giovanni D:tox products for less than $10 at stores like Walmart, Target, CVS, Whole Foods, and more.
