Heelys: Am I Too Old For This Stuff?

There’s nothing quite like doing some shopping at the mall or grocery store and having a kid whiz by you on Heelys. Usually I complain about it under my breath, along the lines of a grumpy old man. Surely I couldn’t be the only one annoyed by kids having fun, right? This thought was exacerbated when my dad came to visit us this summer, bearing gifts for his granddaughter – in the form of Heelys. My arch enemy! Curses!

So, I though, maybe I was the one with the problem. I mean, if other adults were on board with getting their kids – and grandkids – these skate shoes, was I just being a fuddy-duddy? Emma was ecstatic about getting Heelys, it’s something she’s talked about wanting since the fist time she saw them. I decided that I needed to find out for myself if, in fact, I was too old for this stuff. Was it on my Murtaugh List, so to speak?

There were so many designs and styles to choose from at the Heelys shop, there is really something for everyone from youth to adult. I chose a pair (Blade) that I wouldn’t mind wearing as normal street shoes, and wouldn’t make me look like an adult trying to reclaim my youth ;) The shoes are built super-solid and as sturdy as one could ask for. It’s easy to swap out the wheels and they really could pass for regular shoes if you didn’t know you were looking at a pair of Heelys.

So how did we do? Well, of course, we checked out the how-to Heelys video (I wholeheartedly recommend watching this!) and went over some of the safety precautions. The thing that I found out about Heelys right away is that it is not at all like riding roller skates, which I assumed it would be. The unique way of riding on Heelys took some getting used to!

As you can see in the video, Emma and I got off to a tricky start together! It takes some practice, and a lot of bravery, but eventually you catch on. As an adult, though, I wasn’t nearly as resilient as my daughter. I took a few falls and a few splits. But it’s been a lot of fun, and totally worth it, for Emma and I to “skate” together. It makes my trip to the mailbox particularly fun and fast! It’s an easy way to get Emma outside and doing something physical, and, of course, she feels like one of the cool kids now. As for me? I do think I’m too old for this, but I’m not the grumpy old lady in the store anymore. When a kid, or now even my kid, whizzes by me, I “get” it now and smile rather than grumble.

You can check out all the Heelys shoe styles (some even come with two wheels!) and accessories here. I also suggest following Heelys on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date on sales (they had a big one over Labor Day weekend!), new products, and more.
